ChatGPT vs Gemini vs Perplexity

Three assistants, three ways of building an answer, and a different crawler for each — and why the report measures all three.

Three assistants your customers ask, and three different ways of building an answer. This page covers the differences that matter to anyone who wants to be named, and why the Tabyian report measures all three rather than one.

ChatGPT

The most widely used, answering from its trained knowledge and from web search when it needs it. Its crawlers are GPTBot, OAI-SearchBot and ChatGPT-User, and each has a different job — one for training, one for search, one for fetching on demand. Blocking one does not block the others.

Gemini

Google's, and tied into its ecosystem. The crawler that concerns you here is Google-Extended, which is separate from Google's ordinary search crawler: your site can be perfectly indexed in Google Search and blocked from Gemini at the same time. It is a common mistake and it shows up in no SEO report.

Perplexity

The closest to a search engine that writes prose: it cites its links and numbers them beside the sentence. Its crawler is PerplexityBot. It is also the engine that gives the clearest picture of which pages answers in your category are built from.

Why measuring one engine is not enough

The three do not agree. In our measurements a name appears in one and is absent from the other two for the same question, and how often a name is mentioned varies widely between them. Measuring one engine gives you a picture of that engine, not of your visibility.

On top of that, each engine answers differently on every ask. So the gap between "I asked and it didn't mention me" and an actual measurement is the gap between a sample of one and several hundred recorded answers.

How we measure all three

Each of the 72 questions goes to all three engines, three rounds each, and every answer is recorded with its text and its date. The count is then shown per engine and in total. Details on the methodology page.

The free check asks two engines — ChatGPT and Gemini — with twelve questions, so you can see the shape of the measurement before you buy.
